So last night was very interesting. Actually, yesterday was just a good day overall. It started out as a normal day of work. But even before that, I was able to wake up about 30 min earlier than usual to stretch out and wake up much more than I normally do before taking a shower. Then at work, I'm busy working along on those tile renders, still not done yet, and our project manager comes back with two URGENT ads. Now, I have a Friday deadline for these tile renders, which is tomorrow, so I'm getting a little worried. David, the principle / creative director wasn't in at the time, and the other designer here is in over her head with work from another client. So I knew I'd be the one taking on this ad. Ten minutes later, David walks in and we proceed to let him know the situation. And what does he do? He takes on the project himself, allowing me to continue with my rendering bliss, and allowing me to feel like I can meet this deadline. Sweet.
Then, when I got home, I find that I have an email and voice message from my current freelance client. We've been in a bit of a holding pattern, due to her move from LA to Florida. And to fill you in on the situation, her website, click here to see it (still in progress) has evolved, or exploded I should say since my initial estimates. I was going to have to ask for more money to compensate for all the added time, effort and work I have been putting in and will continue to put in.
We finally hooked up, and I was direct and to the point and she was totally on board with me. No hassles, no having to go into great depths about why I deserved more money. I was stoked. Still am actually. And my girlfriend Marisa, who I live with, and who you will undoubtedly hear much more about in the future, has been teaching me how to be more direct with clients and employers was telling me how proud she was of me. She had overheard my conversation and told me she was impressed with the way I handled myself and presented my case! She told me "my baby is becoming a man!" Being funny and serious all at once.
Then, we went on a walk. We just moved down to Oceanside in early June, and really haven't had the time to explore our neighborhood all that much - you know, spending so much time on the beach =). So, instead of planting ourselves on the couch for the entire evening, we decided to go walking. We walked up and out of our little canyon, down the street a little and found ourselves wandering around the nearby high school. Its an older school. The stadium lights were on, and as it works for bugs to a zapper, we decided to check out what was going on. I figured a practice of some kind, and it turned out to be the marching band practice. I really just wanted to check out the stadium, which was really cool. The area I live in now has a lot of canyons and mountains. We are close to the coast, so they are small coastal mountains. The planners of this high school did something really cool. They used a canyon to house their stadium. There are seats on both sides, but the bowl like shape of the traditional stadium is created by this canyon. I'm sure man's hand had something to do with this, but its still really cool. I'd never seen anything like this before. I'll post pictures of it someday when I go back there with a camera.
Peace
