Had an excellent weekend - picutures to come soon. My dad came down to pick up my brother in Brea, CA (close to Fullerton in SoCal), then to get me in Oceanside. We continued on to Green Valley, AZ (just south of Tuscon) to see my Grandma and Grandpa. Whom I haven't seen in about a year. The long drive, about 6 hours, plus the escape and unplugging to the middle of the desert was much needed. Seeing elderly people living, and loving life, even with their limited abilities is refreshing.
Any way, to tie the story to the title, when the three of us finally made it back to my house, the bathroom was the first priority. My brother first, then my dad - who couldn't flush the toilet. He was jiggling the handle, and I who drove there and back, was just a little tired, was like just leave it, its a pain in the ass! Before this, while filling up, the damn thing was so loud that I would have to turn up the tunes. I already wasn't a fan of this toilet.
I took off the top of the tank, and saw that the thing wasn't filling up. I messed with it for about 5 min. before I realized what the deal was. I decided I would try to turn off the flow from the pipes, and discovered a new problem. As I turned the knob for the water, a leak sprung from the wall - but - turning down the amount of water being directed into the toilet got rid of the sound! I broke out the screw driver and needle nose pliers and fixed the leak. Back to the tank, and why it wasn't filling up - there is a stopper that is connected to a chain, that is connected to a flotation device, that when there is a enough water in the tank, turns off the water filling up the tank. For some reason, this chain had been shortened. Not sure how, but when I changed which link was connected, the tank started filling up!
I know this little fix it / solution is no big deal. But for me it is. Its the first time I've fixed a toilet, other than unclogging with a plunger, and I did it myself. Without some one telling me what to do, how to do it, or what needed to be done.
